I’m a Professional Dungeon Master Now!

Share

Got a new job with my friend Dax’s company Dungeon Master Direct. I’m now a professional dungeon master, which means I run weekly D&D 5e games and one-shots. ;D

Dax and I go back a few years as friends because he was going to the same university as my husband when we were all living in Hawaii. He and his wife Bethani are some of my favorite people from back in those days. We were all part of the BYUH Gamers Club, so Dax and I would run weekly tabletop RPGs for club members. He ran D&D, and I ran Call of Cthulhu. The Gamers club also hosted those “How to Host a Murder”-type party games once a semester, and he involved his friends from the Seaside Jesters Improv club to help make them extra immersive, colorful, and fun.

Anyway, after everyone graduated and left the island, Dax and I kind of kept bumping into each other professionally at conventions and symposiums when we ended up in Utah, and he started a professional GMing service. His business did well enough for him to hire more people, and he was kind enough to think of me. He likes to brag that he head-hunted me since all the gaming work I’ve been doing made me a big shot or something (;D), but I really feel like a novice compared to someone as talented an improv actor as Dax. It’s no secret that I’m an introvert, but I do love sharing the coordinated storytelling experience around a tabletop game, so I’m deeply grateful that I can put my own story crafting skills to work.

As of now, I’ve been working with Dax for about a month (I know—I’m always late with these blogs), and I’m currently running one weekly D&D campaign set in Ravnica’s Undercity, and I’ve been put in charge of a smattering of one-shots for birthday parties. It’s been a blast so far, and I’m excited to see where else this awesome opportunity will take me.

In the meantime, if you ever need a Dungeon Master to run D&D 5e for you, consider us. My other coworker at DMD named Mic is a brilliantly talented stage actor and theater professor, so we’ve got quite the team. We run private, public, and corporate games, so check it out!

Mari is a goof who takes herself too seriously sometimes. You can tell by the fact that she loves Pikachu AND wrote her master's thesis on transatlantic postsecular oceanic modernism.
